After reading all the posts on AoC, I’m going down to the store to get it. Vanilla WoW was fun, back when you could choose from a wide range of talents and specializations. I’d stay up all nite raiding in AQ40 in Vanilla. Now when I play I find myself face-rolling my KB and drooling on it. WoW=boring and the game gives me gas. I recently donated it, along with my WII and Atari 2600, to a local preschool…

AoC sounds like a challenge….something I need until the new Xbox is out.

Ruj on February 13, 2013 at 5:32 pm.

I must say that AoC’s pvp melee combat is by far the most skill based, blood pumping action I have ever been a part of.

TERA’s combat system comes in second place, but it is no where near as dynamic.

Graphics? AoC wins by a long shot. I think the reason why AoC is not as popular is because the graphics are SO ahead of its time. Not many households have a PC that can run it.

Mounted combat on a necromancer is AMAZING in AoC! Real time jousting, having your tiger pounce on someone and knock them off their mount… tell me exactly which games have that?

Deathwish’s pvp rules are great! They might send many an unskilled or new players crying to their mothers, but if you find someone to teach you the ropes… I assure you that you will be hooked.

Set’s PvE community is alive and kicking. You can hop into the game and get invited to the starting raids as a fresh 80. The 6 man dungeons have really fun strategies that include emotes, multi level mazes and even traps that sprout from the floor or walls that must be deactivated. It reminds me very much of the Zelda franchise.

Ketop on January 4, 2013 at 1:31 pm.

It’s my opinion, but…

Guild Wars 2 All the Way!

justme21 on December 26, 2012 at 11:48 pm.

I never even seen AOC until i read this about a week age. I have since installed it and love it!!!!

SelfRez on December 22, 2012 at 8:42 am.

AoC is superb MMO and has been for many years. Eventhough it has had its troubles and GM sometime sucks ass. It is the only MMO for abit more mature player like me. I have tried Aion, Rift, GW2 ..and always returned back AoC . Graphics and brutality are the best there is all the other games are just too much for kids and too simple filled with bling bling loots and crap.

Sogne on December 21, 2012 at 10:09 pm.

AOC no doubt, nothing can match their combat system. Graphics are stunning. All others are to me just cartoonish, 123 combat makes me bored. Gw2 haha, just a hype.
Nothing beats the feeling i get from finishing off an annoying ranger with fatality!
Vote Aoc , Tribunal ftw

CROM on December 6, 2012 at 3:40 am.

“AOC must take the #1 spot!! Hands down, the best MMO on the market. Best gameplay, best immersion, sounds, music, graphics. AoC seriously has everything a MMOer can ask for.

Main reason alot of people are turned off or have a bad impression is because they dont know how to upgrade or READ specs for a game. AoC is taxing on your PC, but the reason behind that is, its the best MMO ever made. ”

Criting on November 28, 2012 at 7:02 am.

Age of Conan? How many times can a person vote? Age of Conan has maybe 20,000 players total. Age of Conan was released broken and four years later remains broken. Player versus player has been neglected, sieges never got much traction, Crafting revamp has been promised for four years now, no economy, The only raids getting done have been done for four years and no where near the content of Rift or WoW. So much emphasis on faction grinds. The combat system never worked right, active shields, dodge, all that got gutted so it is just Simon says now. Developers gave up on the game.

There are many great MMOs, but Age of Conan isn’t one of them, thanks for the laugh.

Shiwan on November 28, 2012 at 11:20 pm.

Haha hurted player who didn´t received exactly what he wanted to have… like small children… and you did have so much hope into that game, hey? ;)

Norsu on November 29, 2012 at 3:36 pm.

Just shows what you say is opinion because I disagree with all of it, which is my opinion. AoC had a bad launch, not many deny that. The game today is amazing by all aspects. After four years, it still has the best graphics of any MMO I’ve seen to date. Player vs. player is much better than most games out right now with nothing being super overpowered and its not a CC fest, which is the issue in games like WoW. I can pvp in WoW and get chain CC’d for 25 seconds by one mage. Doubt that? There are videos up about it on youtube talking about how crazy it is. AoC has released tons of new raids and group encounters. T4 is out and my guild just got world first on beating it all, which took us months to accomplish. Turan came out not long ago and had massive raids and new content. Faction “grinding” is super easy now since its an older expansion. Most are working on T4 now, not grinding Khitai. As for the combat system, I love it. I come from the MMOs that emphasized PvP like DAoC and Shadowbane. AoC combat system is awesome. Directional targetting, some CCs but not too much, heal over time rather than just getting to burst heal constantly, etc.

Its the best game out in my opinion. Yours might be different, but I highly disagree.

Norsu on November 29, 2012 at 3:38 pm.

Err, my guild got US first. Not world first. The euros got that way before anyone in the US did.

Psykhie on November 30, 2012 at 3:26 pm.

Clearly you haven’t a clue what you are talking about then. The combat system has always worked. Active shields and dodging work. Have you ever even played Age of Conan? And truly, how many games have any where near the content of WoW which has been around for how long now? It’s easy to say they have more content when they have been around probably 5+ years longer an the next longest lived game on the list. Fact is, Age of Conan still remains the best MMO on the market. Nothing else even comes close. Beautiful graphics. Amazing music. Better combat than anything else around. More realistic look and feel than anything else around. And quite simply, more fun.

Dkzero on December 3, 2012 at 7:05 pm.

You really have no idea what you are talking about, do you?

Age of Conan has way more than 20,000 players, especially on the European servers.

Everything else you said….yeah you just have no idea what you’re talking about ;)

You can only vote once per IP address btw.

Justin on February 14, 2013 at 5:21 pm.

Crafting revamp is going to be done this year and wasn’t given a time frame until somewhat recently
All raids are being completed including ALL of the new tier 4 content on both US and EU servers. T1, T2, and T3 are also all still regularly done, and the fights are engaging and actually fun, and the gear from T4 is amazing for PvP.
I would venture to say AoC has more content than WoW at max level because there are more tiers of raids and 6-man gear to go through and more AA work to be done. Old WoW content becomes pointless after each expansion when they raise the level cap.
Active shields DO work and have for years and years, I guess you were never a smart enough PvPer to work around other peoples shields or move your own occasionally (like when a ranger KB’s you and is shooting you from straight ahead, shields up ftw). “Dodge” isn’t a thing unless you’re referring to doubletapping, which gives 25% evade chance and is actually effective, especially when used with other evade buffs and timed correctly.

Thanks for the laugh with all of your ass-pulled information when you clearly haven’t played the game for years and were never good when you did.

Merissa on November 27, 2012 at 7:12 am.

After reading all these comments me and a few friends decided to try age of conan. Im one week into the game and I just cant seem to stick with one character class omg they are all so much fun to play. I started as a tempest i think if called and than switched to assassin after seing an amazing fatality done where a guy stuck his daggers into the neck of an npc and just sliced blood everywhere. Soon after I rolled assassin I had so much fun until i saw a guadian chop the head off another player thqn i said omg and rerolled again. So finally im having tons of fun again until i saw a barb i tbink it was stick both swords into the chest of an npc and than kick him off it now im rolling barb i dont care i need that in my life. This game is ultra cool we are sticki g with it

Forseti on November 26, 2012 at 3:50 am.

Warning blasphemus talk incoming…

“Take EQ1 completely out of the conversation”.

By far…..FAR FAR….its too old to even have anything more than a mention about what started this genre. Compairing its graphics to that of current games is like compairing a 68′ Charger to a lamborhgini gallardo 550. Both are the best of their day, but they cannot be reasonably argued against eachother.

As for current games:

WoW = old but still solid, needs work on accessability for players of all skills but mostly focussing on upper end players as low end players have been the focus for marketing reasons for the last 5 years at leas

Guild Wars = good game but suffered too much from the same issue other MMOs did, not enough outside story to hype people out of playing wow and not enough staying power to successfully keep them

SW:ToR = Has potential and a good overall game but eventually will retain only a small portion of its usership similar to what EQ has done

AoC = Best free to play game on the market, may suffer from overcomplication and lose customer base but may attract more hardcore gamers as a result. Eventually will settle down as similar to EQ with upgraded graphics and gameplay

Everything else out there = Irrelevant

J Miller on November 21, 2012 at 5:09 pm.

I’ve been playing MMOs for over 20 years since the days of text-based MUDs. I have multiple max level characters on SWTOR, WoW, and GW2. I’ll play a new game at launch, but the game I always go back to is AoC. It’s the best MMO ever made despite the initial bugs and problems in the beginning. Age of Conan is going to be that game that is still being played by true MMO fans while all the kids are still playing WoW.

Henry on December 25, 2012 at 2:27 am.

Of all my years of MMOs, my best memories are of playing DIKU-Muds. Something about text-based that flares the imagination.

Age of Conan #1

uglyduckin on November 16, 2012 at 4:22 pm.

Pro Tip for the Author: GW2 isn’t an MMO, its a FPS with a fantasy theme and is just a glorified rehash of the original, which also was not an MMO.

That being said, I liked AoC, I liked WoW back in the day, A lot of these are good games. I’ll probably end up voting for Rift just because it’s the only challenging game out there currently. There is actually a sense of danger, especially in the new expansion, which has so much content it makes my head spin.

Try it out guys! A bunch of these are great games!

behindyou on January 8, 2013 at 8:41 am.

I just want to make a comment on this one.

You sir is one hell of a fail, you surely do have a different definition of MMO eh?
FYI MMO is Massive Multiplayer Online.
So you are saying GW2 isn’t an MMO? it is an MMORPG
there is also MMOFPS

So i consider your argument is irrelevant.
just my 2 cents

David on November 12, 2012 at 3:53 pm.

All above AoC is very controversial game. As you can read passion which have players playing it strongly contrast to oposite comments. True is that in some objective features like is graphic, music, combat system etc. … it really exceel and for the people who can get over some weaknesses it will be simply best game ever made but in the same time there would be lot of people slandering the game and there also would by some reasons why… it is simply not game for everyone. I luckily belongs to the first group of people :)

Sam on November 22, 2012 at 12:07 pm.

Yeah it is not the game for everyone that is the reason its the best! All this other MMO”s try to please everyone, but Age of Conan focuses for this certain type of people and for those it will be the fucking greatest mmo ever made :D Basically everyone who likes savage, skill based, challenging, intense, brutal but beautiful gfx , medieval themed, great athmosphere type of game will love aoc.

AoC is the one and only mmo worth spending my time on :)

JUDAS on November 15, 2012 at 5:28 am.

Age of Conan is best mmo i ever played. PvP combat is legendary and so are PvE encounters, especially in Khitai & graphics are way better then 99% MMO-s out there.
Also not to forget that AoC has great community, we even give cookies to the new players……….before we do DEEECAP combo

All other mmo games have poor graphics and wow-ish 0 skill combat system……
AoC is the real thing.

Suvani on November 10, 2012 at 3:49 am.

AoC is a fantastic game.

I’m a launch vet- and I’ve tried others games. TSW, GW2, Everquest 1 and 2, SWTOR, LOTRO, WoW, Rift. And I’ve played those games for a minimum of 7 months each. And I ALWAYS go to AoC.

There is no PvP openworld? I can stand in Bori for 5 minutes and be clobbered instantly. And then you start out full out wars. Every time. And in game we aren’t complaining about unbalanced PvP or not enough people. The complaint I hear most is about how badly I suck at my class.

You hear that? Launch vet, max level, great gear, sucks at my class, but I freakin’ LOVE this game.

Not enough people? Not playing the expansive content, seeing the fantastic landscape art, tinkering with an outstandingly memorable combat system, and delving into a world that’s so refreshingly mature and mysterious because there aren’t enough people in the game?

Then PLAY the game. Get your friends to play the game. Population levels won’t increase if you keep waiting for someone else to play too.

Your first school dance probably didn’t happen any differently either. Nobody wants to go out and brave the floor by themself? Then nobody dances, and nobody has a good time.

But there IS a good community on AoC, we are here and we’re havin’ a hell of a time. Join us! Just watch out for the swords. I hear those are pointy.

Aryon on November 10, 2012 at 12:14 am.

SWToR is the best mmo out there, I love the stories and end game and pvp are getting better and better as time goes on.

Gcustoms on November 9, 2012 at 2:40 pm.

Aoc ftW! GW2 is all hype based, once that dies down aoc will be back on top.
People who say its “garbage” are those too stupid to understand it and got farted on in pvp.

BJJsNapOrTap on November 8, 2012 at 10:43 pm.

Age of Conan is by far the best game I have ever played. I have tried other MMO’s but nothing and I mean NOTHING can hold my attention like this game. The PVP is competitive and the graphics are out of this world. This does not look like a cartoon land WOW clone (we are all sick of that shit). This game is hands down BEAST MODE!

If I were you I would start playing now!! this game is about to have some new expansions coming out that will be very good additions!

Its like crack.. Try it once and your hooked! Sign up on the SET server as thats where the population is highest. Soon there will be cross server technology so mini game PVP and other things of the sort will be happening. Alsooo there are PVP zones on this PVE server.

Epicboss on November 8, 2012 at 10:30 am.

What I like about Age of Conan is the challenge. All the other mmos I used to play especially WOW its omg 123 easy you can even macro the entire sequence and win. You can enter any dungeon or raid and rape mindlessly spamming 1-0. That’s basically the same with most other MMOS but that cannot be done in AOC. The dungeons are difficult and the rewards are really good. The catch is you have play your class really well, pay attention to cast bars, and surroundings. I like the fact that you basically need to be on Ventrilo in order to beat these epic 6 man dungeons. I love it! it promotes huge team work and I think funcom did a great job with that. Also, the dungeons can be done without ventrilo by pro group.

AOC takes it for me as well. I’ve tried WOW, Rift, GW2, etc and have come back to Conan time and time again. Still runs the best graphics by far, most immersive gameplay, great PVE, and PVP that’s neglected, but still fun as hell. The game actually takes skill, which is a far cry from the other face rolls we she on the market’s a merciless world, come join the battle.

David on November 9, 2012 at 4:58 pm.

haha comment from player who failed in AoC… too hard game for ya isn´t it? or there is “poor” class balance? ;)

Doomkiller on November 6, 2012 at 3:55 am.

Age of Conan is the Best MMO ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David on November 5, 2012 at 4:02 pm.

Well GW2 is going to win ofc. It is new, focused on PvP, it has lot of players which are not pissed off from developers yet :) and it´s great (tho cartoonish) game but… you know unofficial winner is already AoC

It has poor costumer service, poor ui, bugs, devs don´t support PvP, community is spread apart, it has cheaters, low population, lags, bori…

But in everything else like graphic (and yes even after 4 years it´s still demanding hardware wise), music (omg almost as good as Basil Poledouris for those who knows), combat system (best not even among MMORPGs), dungeons (despite you try hard for hours sometimes you are simply not going to make it) , atmosphere (if you can effort turn on shadows in Paiking of Khitai and your mouth got open and not only there) , fatalities (yes this game is announced as real hardcore) and in many other objective features this game completely exceel…

And well at least from my PoV I don´t play games cause good costumer service or friendly community…

Ragnarx on November 5, 2012 at 8:13 am.

AGE OF CONAN is the best game ever made hands down. The Combat system, the pvp, the pve, it is all amazing. The graphics which came out in 2008 is still the BEST out there. GW2 has nothing on Conan, which is a breathing world that continues to provide content that can take years to accomplish…or you can speed up the process depending on the guild you are in.

It has OPEN WORLD PVP, which is the only game on the list that does have it. There is no special instance you have to go into, already prepared to engage in pvp. No, you have to always be ready…or if you don’t like open world you can pick a pve server.

What is so amazing too, is the constant content being generated by Funcom, and they even give this to you…for FREE. Players get an entire expansion for free at the end of this year. What is not to love about that.

The animations, the “dark fantasy” style (not stupid Asian looking games i.e. final fantasy graphics) . This game…it is based off of an awesome world created by Robert E. Howard, a brutal unforgiving world. This isn’t for little kids, its rated R basically. I’ve played WoW, Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2 (couple weeks before I did everything that game had to offer) and AoC crushes all competition.

Abdullah on November 3, 2012 at 10:04 pm.

Age of conan is the best, they just have to improve the pvp fighting system

Robert Finch on November 5, 2012 at 4:15 pm.

The combat mechanics are the BEST mechanics of any MMO currently out. The gear disparity is what is hurting the balance, not the revolutionary combat system.

Lopez123 on November 3, 2012 at 8:45 pm.

”Average hours spent a week in America: WoW – 22.7 hours; Work – 35 hours; TV – 39.25 hours.”

so yea, from what i have tried i can definately agree with MMORPG players in the poll discussion that Age of Conan is the best game of 2012

the reason why for me is the graphics which are stunning, the PvP which is the most compelling and skill based, the progressive raiding and lvl 80 content(something it lacked in 2008), the story-line is intriguing with the option of single player or multiplayer in some circumstances. honestly its mostly been unanimously said already.

best point though, is the accessibility of it all: FREE :D

both Rift and GW2 have disapointed me..and WoW is just an old succesfully marketted piece of sh*t :D

PvP fan on November 3, 2012 at 7:12 pm.

What keeps me in Age of Conan is the lowbie PvP:

spend an 1h or 2 to get a few levels and gear on Deathwish and you have all the content you could ever ask for except seiges, for any one that is trying to figure out if they want to try AoC for PvP, roll Deathwish :)

Elena on November 3, 2012 at 5:01 pm.

I used to play priest in wow for soooo many years and before that I played as a priest in eq1. About a year ago I tried age of Conan as a priest of mithra and never looked back. I am only really good at pve and this game has the absolutely most challenging content, I love it! The pvp is okay…. I mean I suck but from what I have seen and experienced its very skill based. I know level 59′s that can kill 80s.

PvP fan on November 3, 2012 at 7:13 pm.

been there, done that, vs a 4yr old vet with AAs with a lvl 31 barb, so yea skill pvp approved

Ha! You wan’t challenging PvE? Play Lotro…some of the endgame content of Rise of Isengard has only been completed on a few servers. Imagine that.

Lopez123 on November 5, 2012 at 1:43 pm.

and… some bosses have been solely beat by few guilds, a single guild can say it beat the game, 4yrs in

Shiwan on November 4, 2012 at 11:38 am.

Well I really like your honest attitude. True is that AoC PvP is not for everyone as it is so skillbased that i.e. it took me almost 2 years to become good player. So I can imagine lot of people will tell PvP is disbalanced, you can improve your char via rock banging etc. Such comments usually comes from people who failed in AoC while in other games they can be superior. Of course if you are 12 y.o. you got no chance in game but for mature players it is the best choice. Yes AoC has it flaws but from objective PoV (graphic, combat system, dungeons, mature content blood, sex, fatalities) it is simply the best game available.

Mabus on November 3, 2012 at 4:19 pm.

None of these games can compare to AOC. Graphics? AoC… Immersive PVP? AoC. More PVE zones then you can handle? (regrettably) AoC. Too many players got a bad taste in their mouth with the bug filled launch, but a lot has changed since then. You should give it a try, you have nothing to lose since it is free to play.

Cubalibre on November 3, 2012 at 8:07 am.

I have played EQ1, EQ2, TSW, AOC, GW1, GW2, SWTOR, SWG, RIFT, STAR TREK, COH, and WOW.

Best graphics: Age of Conan / TSW
Best game play: Age of Conan
Best combat system: Age of Conan
Best Dungeons: Age of Conan

I’ll start by saying that from the list of games that I have played, every single dungeon in those games had little to no challenge at all except for EQ1, EQ2 and Age of Conan “AOC”. What makes AOC the best is its skill based combat system that makes PVE and PVP in that game head and shoulders above everything else that I listed. The dungeons are epic and hard as hell and will always have you on the edge of your seat with the most intense pve content, its crazy. It’s really the only game on this list that you have to be on ventrilo just to do a 6 man dungeon. The PVP in this games is the best that I have ever seen especially in duels. You can literally reach the max level of a character today and if your a good player, you can beat anyone. Of course gear does make a difference but it only makes a difference between 2 equally skilled players.

Tyja on November 3, 2012 at 12:49 am.

I have played very many MMOs over the last decade, but none of them have stuck with me the way that Age of Conan has. I am primarily a roleplayer, so my view might be somewhat different from a diehard raider or PVPer (though I do enjoy those aspects of the game too), but it is my favorite game to RP in of all time. The only unfortunate thing about the game is that over the years, the population has dwindled to the point where it’s tough to find RP outside of guilds. But it doesn’t have to be this way! I long for the game to pick up and to see more random people out in the world again. I strongly encourage anyone who’s been on the fence to give AOC a shot.

PvP fan on November 3, 2012 at 7:25 pm.

how exactly does someone RP, ufortunately the role-playing servers were shut down so i never got to figure it out

Buffy on November 2, 2012 at 9:04 pm.

hands down AOC is head and chest above them all. Absolutely skill based..

Fencek on November 2, 2012 at 8:40 pm.

Rift is by far the best and most complete MMORPG. Yes, the word complete is being used here. All facets of the game are very good. There is so much to do in the game besides raiding (which is probably the best in the business). If you want a challenge, then I suggest trying Rift.

GW2 is second due to impressive graphics, simply game play, and WvW. I do, however, miss raiding, but the grouping is good.

EQ2 used to be on my list with fantastic combat, graphics, and raiding. However, the Devs pretty much killed the game with their lack of love for the playerbase. Now, it’s just another expansion that caters to raiding only and pretty much nothing else. Even itemization and class balance is just horrible and forgotten. Even F2P hurt it allot.

Klug on November 2, 2012 at 6:39 pm.

LOL, depsite clear favoritism by the author, WoW is getting trounced.

Cubalibre on November 2, 2012 at 5:21 pm.

I have played EQ1 EQ2 SWTOR SWG RIFT GW GW2 WOW TSW STAR TREK and of them all AGE OF CONAN is the best of them all. Without a doubt AGE OF CONAN has the most real time and the best combat system of all MMOS. Also the dungeons in this game are the hardest, visually best looking and most intense of all the mmos that i have played. AGE OF CONAN is a skill based game and i promise that anyone who has not played this game would find themselves on the edge of their seat.

Dawn on November 2, 2012 at 3:02 pm.

I’ve played a huge list of games on this list. I was an original WoW beta tester, and stuck with the game for so many years. It has fantastic style and charm, but sadly has gone way of the kiddies and as a 36yo, it’s just hard to play it now. I’ve always wished they would release a WoW 2.0 for grownups. Then very recently I discovered Rift, and my wish came true. Rift is what WoW should have become over the years – instead of traveling down into kiddy land. The graphics are beautiful, the sounds are delightful, and the play is out right fun. So many options if you don’t like questing. I leveled to 50 in only 3 weeks of very casual play by running IA’s and closing rifts. I stopped questing at around 35. Rift gets my vote.

Other fantastic games, AOC and EVE, are beautiful to look at, but don’t hold my attention as much and to me the most important feature is the “fun” aspect of the game. With rift, customer service, community, world events, etc…. it’s just the most fun i’ve had since the launch of vanilla WoW.

Gandalf on November 2, 2012 at 12:32 pm.

Why is GW2 on the list for best mmoRPG. This game dont even has / support an official RP-Server

DeadCoyote on November 2, 2012 at 12:12 pm.

AOC has issues for sure but it does have great graphics and combat system. The lack of pvp on Tyranny bores me and I keep trying other games… WOW, LOTR, SWTOR, GW2, RIFT, TSW. I still end up back at AOC. I want more but I can’t find it.

Robert Paulson on November 1, 2012 at 11:55 pm.

You guys still PVE for PVP?
How’s rock banging for pvp levels going?

Robert Finch on November 5, 2012 at 4:19 pm.

Banging rocks is for sell outs. Farming rock bangers is where the fun is. Or being a PVP 5 legit and schooling PVP 10s while wearing no gear… Skill > rock banging.

Age of conan is the best in my opinion! cant stand out any other mmos :)

GW2, really? Really?

Alright… wait…

Really, GW2, REALLY?

Tough Guy on November 1, 2012 at 5:55 pm.

Weird! i never heard of AoC, it gets all these votes, so you would think the votes are hacked

but you check the comments, see the nice explanations why they play it, do some research and then you are struck with AW

damn, this thing is free to play, obviously gonna try it out

Haukon on November 1, 2012 at 3:46 pm.

AoC combines both movement and strategy making the highest level of skill attainable by those that accel at either or both. The pvp is so emersive that even with next to no attention over 4 years it has still remained one of the most solid features. If your into PvE then you will not be disappointed either as it recieves frequent upgrades keeping players interest well fed.

I’ve been playing on a 4 year old laptop with little to no technical difficulty and can only imagine playing the game with the graphics cranked up as I see in others videos and photos.

Free to play, give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Robert Simpson on October 31, 2012 at 8:44 pm.

First, AOC was my first MMO. I had little interest in MMO’s until I saw that there was one coming out based on Robert E. Howard’s amazing world and brutal hero Conan. I have played the game since the game was released and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I have a number of characters at max level and played every class in the game. They all offer unique strategies and enjoyment. I’m a fan of Howard’s work and this game has offered me the chance to step into the world from the books I loved growing up. I think Funcom has done a wonderful job of bringing this world to life.

Since getting my feet wet in the MMO pool with AOC I have tried a number of MMOs that are the listed here and some that are not. I can’t say I hated any of them, they all had their strengths and weakness. I continued to play AOC while I tried these other games and the opinion I have come away with is as follows. AOC graphically holds its own with any of the MMOs out there today. The game has a mature theme that I just haven’t seen in any other game I’ve tried. The combat system in this game is the best I’ve ever seen in any game. I have not played a game other than AOC that gives me the feeling like I’m in a battle for my life with only my sword and wits keeping me from that fatal blow. Many of the quest lines while leveling your character are both interesting and intriguing. Also Funcom has not strayed from the path of the Conan stories and lore, which I as fan I greatly appreciate. The world created in AOC is large and and varied from the sands of Stygia to the mountains of Cimmeria. They are both dangerous and graphically breath taking. I often find my self just standing just looking at the beautiful vistas that are spread before me, this is truly a chance to walk in the foot steps of Conan.

AOC has truly spoiled me for all other games and I have not found another on the market that holds my interest like this one.

Gamgii on November 3, 2012 at 1:21 pm.

Totally agree with this! Age of Conan is the game for us testosterone filled barbarians! all other games do give me the same feeling as aoc does!

Rift is one of the best MMOs out there. Best PVE, good PVP and with TRION you have the best Publisher/Developer on your Side.

And with Storm Legion one of the biggest Extensions in the MMO History will released soon. Amazing Housing(Dimensions) btw :)

Verko on November 2, 2012 at 1:12 am.

I agree, ive played em all and keep ending up back playing rift. Best PVE by a mile, Best class system by a mile! and Best Dev team.

age of conan is the best ever MMORPG only for real men

RadoGamer on October 31, 2012 at 2:19 am.

Played them all, LOTRO has them all hands down, best graphics, game play and very few trolls and thrashers. Most sophisticated story line, and best battles!! Community is solid and people help each other. Those who complain about the game don’t get it. Have many top games on my PC, all best graphics and game play. ACIII is about to be installed upon release but LOTRO get’s 90% of my game play. All others were just too crowded, too full of rude people and graphics are poor!!

bob dole on October 31, 2012 at 11:47 pm.

I really enjoyed lotro, until I played Rift and Guild wars 2. But best graphics? Seriously?! BTW I left lotro when I realized to level my alts I would have to kill the 350 wargs from _____ and again in _____ and again in ______, for my deeds, and then to do it all again with spiders…

Gavrael on October 30, 2012 at 4:17 am.

I came into MMO’s with The Matrix Online. I never even considered playing such kidworlds like WoW or any others with dwarfs and furries. When MxO closed down I paused for years. Then I discovered AoC. I was totally excited by this realistic graphics, the beautyful chars and.. no dwarfs or furries. It’s simply a game for adult people. Then I heard about The Secret World. And I was excited from the first rumour on: at least something contemporary and dark like MxO was! I am still holding my sub to AoC but I am seldom on there now, I am playing TSW with excitement – the graphics is even better than AoC (same engine but enhanced with DX11), the missions extremely challenging. Best setting of a game ever.

Yava on October 29, 2012 at 7:51 pm.

Where is Everquest I + II ?? Best MMORPG i ever played.
Only The Secret World pulled me away from that – second best but on its way :)

Vaere on October 29, 2012 at 6:04 pm.

Age of Conan for sure. Best graphics, even though they are over 3yrs old, best combat. Amazing story.

WHile many blame Craig for the decline in AOC, the real deal is he actually saved PVE in the game. WHich did make up over 50%. Before Craig there was a lot of issues, AoC had the highest sales of any game at that time in Preorders over 800K. When it was released however the only thing that worked was PVP for the most part (sieges NEVER have worked correctly), I remember many good days of kicking people off of bridges and such to their doom with my horse.. Ahh fun times on Tyranny..

Anyways, AoC lost over 1/2 its population very fast within the year. Craig came in and the hemirage slowed to a steady bleed. For PVP one of the big issues isnt the pvp itself, but the community ruined a lot of it, they poisoned the environment for new players. PVE was saved when he came in, however since he came in there has been no advancement of the PVP, which is why most pvp feel neglected and that he ruined the game. Truth be told, he didnt do much new for PVP, however what he did for PVE was to actually fix and start delivering on what was promised. Hopefully he throws the PVP folks a bone soon.

Bertie on October 29, 2012 at 5:04 pm.

AOC all the way. The other MMO’s are for Jimmy Saviles.

Caryallice on October 29, 2012 at 4:02 pm.

AoC is hands down the best game to be offered yet. It has its negative points to be sure but it’s not cartoonish, makes you really work hard to get good at combat (assuming you’re playing a melee toon) and the community is largely supportive (with a few miscreants in global or in mini’s raging and QQ’ing about stuff) . The scenery is by far the most realistic and the level of personal control over how you look and what you wear in game is awesome. If you haven’t tried this game…you are missing out. If you have played and have left…come home and help make Hyboria better!

camille boucquillon on October 29, 2012 at 3:44 pm.

PLZ remove firefall from the list, it is not being launched in 2012. PLZ revise your site, this is the ONLY poll to evaluate the best mmorpg in 2012, would be great if it sounds credible. If you change a few things, ill be looking to putting this on

HenryAu on October 29, 2012 at 9:46 am.

Age of Conan is something more than game.

Anna on October 28, 2012 at 10:39 am.

Only EVE steals some of my gaming time, but it’s still Age of Conan, that’s on top of any ranking. The graphics is still the best of all MMOs!

Gavrael on October 30, 2012 at 4:22 am.

Believe me Anna, you cannot say this unless you had a look on TSW. The graphics are like…well… you never ever have seen such realistic trees, water, coastlines, weather, as in this game. I love AoC though, it has more green and lovely Areas than the dark forests of TSW, but… at least its the same game engine but obviously enhanced. Every time I come back to AoC I think… whut…why are the trees so blurry, lol. This comes from the extreme sharpness of the TSW trees.. they will hopefully enhance AoC same way, set it up for their new engine too. Of course all this is spoken about an MMO – single player games based on for ex. the Cry Engine may look better (not all of them). MMO’s based on the Cry Engine look awful.

Jauer on October 27, 2012 at 1:52 pm.

I have tryed alittle wow, and snifed alittle to other mmo, but i always return to aoc. having played it for several years with alot of frustration, but the last year the improvements in AOC are just amazing, the finishing of jade citadel(most breath taking grafix and gameplay) the release of turan area and instances(cant wait for dragon spine release) fixing of several old issues, funcom have now started a huge revamp of classes and im very impressed with the work. the gore and brutality is simply unmatched. no funny or cute races. all chars are realistic build, no pokemon shit. this is a game where u have to be good to do good. it took me 2 years to become decent. a veteran running a new toon will still own. grind wise i dont see the big problem, u just need to know what ure doing. alot of the regular encounters in pve have been scaled allitle down so new ppl can get gear easyer, a game shop also offers feats and pve,pvp gear so ppl can get fast into it.
on the bad side sieges have been quite laggy but they fixed the crashes. the craft system have been outdated on most parts for 80% of the content, the new system will require the player to figure out crafts himself and not be recepies from drops. this chage wil be amazing and shud make all crafts become happy campers. both things funcom are working at atm. along with adding more pvp content. so within near future the last big disapointments in the game will be history. only last problem is when funcom releases patched there is often issues that means ninja patches or repairs the next day. all in all a game that have been getting the shape it shud have had long ago. last point the soundtracks are just unmathed im the entire genre…
check the soundtrack

world of warcraft ALWAYS has been’s favorite, there is no surprise there. i just hope that realizes that ppl that play games that they care about, play other games the WoW, iv spent the 3 last days spamming ppl from WoW to vote, they havent. simple. they dont care.

Chukk on October 26, 2012 at 6:57 pm.

At one point in time AoC was the best MMO on the market, hands down. Now its just meh. PvP is nonexistent – other than the same 5 minigames over and over. World pvp is dead because of no population. No other pvp exists because sieges r broken and no population. Funcom refuses to add pvp content to the game, focusing only on PvE.

I will admit AoC has ruined every other MMO since i left it. No other MMO is anywhere near as good as AoC used to be, but i just cant enjoy the game in its current state either

Toturii on October 26, 2012 at 6:46 pm.

Age of Conan just lol, why you all going at it about the combat system wen you all facerolled Demo’s, Necro’s and Tosses for pvp (all click click casters). Come on you guys make me lol so hard i spilled my Brandy. Just to add the people ingame treat people like crap and there is constant fights in global chat not mentioning racism between the spannish, russians and other none english speaking players. Why act as if the game is high and mighty while it is not. Also let me mention how buggy the dreamworld enjin is and that you need a high end pc to play it. The DX10 is buggy and causes plenty issues and loading to zones omg takes time even after you have been there millions of times, and don’t forget the out of memory crashes yes they are stil there. They have revamped most of the classes so bad that some of them are like gods in pvp and pve. Also don’t forget the exploits and hackers that use AoC BUDDY. Realy guys you make me laugh so hard defending a broken game, why do you think people left in the first place. Age of Conan is stil in Beta form tbh and how many times have they released patches without testing it proply on testlive servers or not at all. The game has constant latency issues and plenty of times disconnects people right after killing a raid boss. These are all facts that i have exp till mid sept 2012, AoC is crap the end

Bertie on October 29, 2012 at 5:02 pm.

Your very last statement is utter nonsense. The game does have issues but the positives of this game destroy any of the so called competition. Every other mmo is child like in comparison.

Also, you must have been away for a while or are blind in both eyes as I see loads of tanks and rogues with high level PVP ranking so your casters only jibe about PVP is wrong.

I don’t get lots of crashes zoning so the only difference must be your shitty PC. Perhaps it’s time you bought some up to date equipment and ditched windows XP.

Robert Finch on November 5, 2012 at 4:22 pm.

Sounds like you got owned pretty bad in PVP and can’t get over it.

erock25 on October 26, 2012 at 2:36 pm.

Age of Conan is miles ahead of every other game and i have played them all. It is really worth checking out. F2P up to level cap and then subscribe.

Alex on October 27, 2012 at 10:30 am.

Guild Wars 2 is the best out there. Now even, a free holliday theme! Loads of action, new dungeons, etc. for free. And that every holliday time! Age of Conan sucks. It was my all time fav in the day, but funcom ruined it. Look, they have so much lag, hardly any players and the veterans are being raped by funcom.

Guild Wars 2, no sub per month, alot of fun and large! No….very HUGE!

Bertie on October 29, 2012 at 5:03 pm.

Lag is gone. Unless it’s your internetz.

Stoplying on November 8, 2012 at 9:52 am.

Nope its not, it returns and servers need to restart and if there is just 20 people on screen the engine starts to warp people around even with a 100mb fibre with 40 ms ping to the servers. It has nothing to do with the connection at all.

Ataline on October 26, 2012 at 12:34 pm.

I have been playing AOC for close to 4 years now. I tried the betas for SWTOR RIFT and TSW. They didnt steal me away :)

For myself …nothing compares.

I would suggest anyone that tried years ago give it another shot as it is FTP now.

sarcopthes on October 26, 2012 at 11:58 am.

Age of conan is definately the best mmo. Awesome pvp combat system combined with dark fantasy lore with Nietzsche like brutal philosophy world makes this game unique.

Mike on October 26, 2012 at 7:56 am.

Who sponsors this website, because really it doesn’t look like anyone that matters is behind this. There is no award at all, and the winner will be the game that attracts the most casual players and/or is newest.

Also I love the massive bias the author of this site tries to introduce by bigging up World of Shitecraft but no other MMO. Way to go. You just lost the little credibility you had left.

Chumz on October 26, 2012 at 1:42 am.

I like how people complain about Craig Morrison and him adding in PVE content. Let get this striaght AOC had almost no PVE when it came out. Once you hit around 40 you had to almost nothing to do but grind mobs to level. Craig Morrison saved AOC from extinction. If you think otherwise your a moron.

As for Rift Trion has the best dev team of any mmo, period.

AOC and Rift for games of the year.

Stoplying on November 8, 2012 at 9:58 am.

Yeah, you seem to missed the huge amount of player the game actually lost when Morrison changed the path for aoc. The game certainly lacked pve content but the addition of pve gear and gearbased progression killed pvp content for the huge masses.

The exodus of players actually started with the addition of pve content. The pvp servers where dominant back then and now they are just a fraction of their former glory.

Its just amazing that they took the best pvp game and turned it into a pve bugfest and loosing huge heaps of players while doing it.

FC admits to AOC being a churnfest and a let down and pre 1.05 they thought it was a success in their reports, if they can admit to it the players might face the facts as well.

Kushite Queen on October 25, 2012 at 11:45 pm.

There is something for everyone in Age of Conan. The graphics are breathtaking, the soundtrack is inspiring. The unique combo and fatality system beat every other button pressing MMO. The storylines are rich with lore. Guilds can work together as a community to raise their guild level, build an impressive city and take battlekeeps. There are plenty of raids, pvp mini-games and roleplaying opportunities in this gritty and intense fantasy setting, and there is so much left to accomplish post level cap. No matter what your gaming interests are, AoC will leave you satisfied.

Toturii on October 25, 2012 at 11:02 pm.

Age of Conan were to begin, Ok speaking as a vet of Aoc here is my opinion. The game is Broken Sieges have not worked since 2008, the only amazing thing about AOC is the combat system. The game was destroyed by Craig Morrison pvp wise. The game could have been the top PVP MMO out there until he decided to create Bori. Trust me I use to love the Game it was a good game to be honest, but after they started ignoring the PVP community that is wen they started to loose players and were forced to merge servers due to low pop. I was there threw it all, my original server was Corinthia RP-PVP. We had dreams for Age of Conan but Craig Morrison destroyed it, he lacked knowledge for pvp and let us be honest here after 3 years all he added was COJS and 1 other mini map come on people you are being taken for a huge ride by Funcom. Do not forget Bori OMG the Best PVTree content out there. The game PVE wise is good but to much of a grind, yes the raids are almost good and well the gear looks crap but hey it is your opinion here yes you as a AOC fanboy. As for me I have grasped something much better and that can feed my lust for blood and that game is part of the top 3 yes it is Guild Wars 2 the one that took so much of AOC’s community away. So Craig Morrison if you Happen to be reading this you are a Fail Game developer and I think you should learn from ArenaNet as they have accomplished more in 2weeks than you have in your time at AOC.

AOC all the way :D

cacikboy on October 25, 2012 at 9:38 pm.

The only game on this list where u actually need skills is aoc. I have bought gw2 aswell but i really hate the fact when a boss spawns u dont need to do anything cause all the players attack and kill him anyway :( . The amount of gore and the ability to do fatalities in aoc is awesome! Pvp in conan is really hardcore i like it very much. Funcom is doing their best but sometimes they arent that fast as they ought to be.In my opinion gw2 is just too overrated and alot of kids playing that game thats why i stopped playing gw2 at lvl 12. Especially when i was in a gameshop and i saw a kid with his mother buying that game AND HIS MOTHER PAYED FOR IT LOL. Dont hate aoc because u r nab plz there is no game on the market who can top the graphics, gameplay, lore and difficulty .. AOC is the best ! tyvm :)

Age of Conan, The Secret World and Rift: Storm Legion. This is my top 3.

Age of Conan is simply the best MMO ever made. But as people before me have said, Its not for 12 year old kids who like click click games with purple dwarfs and yellow trolls. Its a game that need skills and dedication. So for all of you who want to experience the best combat system ever existed in a MMO game combined with stunning graphics, blood&gore and boobs…yes BOOBS. Try this game and you wont be disappointed;)

Rifter on October 25, 2012 at 12:32 pm.

AoC had its moments, but Funcom lost me when they took over a year to fix end-game content, and release new content. T4 was broken forever, incomplete – and I bet the Jade City is still not there.. (promised to us w/ the expansion or shortly after- this was what, 2010?) Anyway.. How does Guild wars 2 go from 3rd place to 1st place in 2 hrs? Oh, and check out Rift- its the underdog of these in the list..There first expansion launches 11/13. Oh, and Where’s EverQuest? People do still play it. (EQ1, EQ2?). At least pay some respect to the first true MMORPG IMHO.. WoW wouldnt be here if it wasnt for them, IMHO.

Jade Citadel (aka Age of Conan T4 raid) is their finished, awesome and on farm :D
and new raid coming soon

I understand, 2-3yarse ago AoC was in messy status, but now it’s really awesome.
Tried GW2 but really can’t compare with the uber combat system, the gore and the atmosphere of AoC.
It’s like comparing Hello Kitty with Rambo ^^

Adult Gamer on October 25, 2012 at 11:57 am.

My first MMO is actually WOW but I gave it up as it is not user-friendly to newbies like me. I tried Age of Conan next and I took to it like duck to water. AoC takes me around the world to exotic locales. The graphics are breath-taking and the music is epic. The combat system is realistic and the quests are very varied and interesting, e.g. earning gold by being a prostitute (nothing explicit there no worries).

SWTOR too is user-friendly and it has the best storylines of all games. Lots of twists and turns and some dialogues make me fall off my chair.

I play 3 MMOs at the moment – and my vote goes to Age of Conan. The Old Republic is a close second. The advantage of GW2 is there is no need for subscription.

Toturii on October 25, 2012 at 7:09 pm.

Yes AoC has a great combat system but the game turned into a massive grind, and it lacks pvp content, sieges are broken since release many bugs, class balance is a joke and world pvp is gone. I am a vet since 08 and canceld my EU & US subs 2 months ago due to lack of pvp content and faluire of proper comunication with the comunity. What takes AoC 2 years to fix takes the devs at GW2 a week at most. Therefore Craig Morrison is a joke in the MMO comunity

sortil on October 27, 2012 at 8:57 am.

AOC simply is the best. As a old comic collector and lovecraft fan its great, beutifull world and stunning graphics. a lott of twisting questlines and the best part is the awesome community.
Not everyone is interrested in pvp Toturii, maybe one of the reasons the pve servers have great population and a wonderfull community, wile the pvp servers are filled with trolls and russians.(and the pvp is pretty good on the pve servers to, just not the hatefull open world pvp.)
And yes, conan is a bitt grindy. I would say its a game for ppl that want to learn a game and get some skills, because its truly a game with depth. And you have to be willing to invest both time and energy to be able to get close to end game material.
And thats wy we stick with the game, its challenging and fun.!

PunkJiuJitsu on October 24, 2012 at 2:18 pm.

Age of Conan has come a long way from its launch date. There is just no other MMO out right now that even comes close to combat system in this game. There is constant updates and soon to be a HUGH addition to this game. There will be soon a new crafting revamp that changes everything in the game. Also some things to look forward to PVP wise. Funcom has plans to give returning players much needed love and offer incentives. Don’t get me wrong this game is not for the soft skinned. If you are not a HARDCORE PVPER or someone that has the ability to learn quickly then this game might be rough for you(as it’s not a click click game you NEED SKILL). Rough in the sense that Age Of Conan is HARDCORE hands down the BEST MMORPG game out there that offers competitive PVP and awesome zones with challenging PVE instances.
